It’s been a while since I’ve looked at any houses, but I gave a quick look through RealtyWatch.com, and found something I had to go look at. From what I’ve seen, this looks to be the best townhouse in this are for the money. There is only picture of the outside, so I’ll have to see what sort of condition the inside is in…but it was just built in 2,000, so hopefully nothing too bad. For $365,000 it seems like a bargain, considering I was looking at smaller townhouses in further areas for more money just a few months ago. I know this area well, and it’s a prime location in my opinion.
I’ll be posting pictures and opinions next week after I take a look at it, so stay tuned. For anybody in the Northern Virginia area that knows their real estate, check out the listing and let me know what you think. For those not in this area, what does $365,000 get you in your area?

07/13/2007 10:48 amJD: Jesus, I’m about to move to Memphis! That is insane how drastic of a difference of a place you can get depending on where you are. Even in this area $365k was by far the cheapest townhouse of that “looking” caliber that I’ve seen.

07/13/2007 11:19 amIn our area it really depends on what suburb you are in - closer to the city gets you an old, rundown 2BR/1BA home but further out you can still find a nice home about 2000-3000 sqft 4-5BR/2-3BA.
The link JD shared is the exact reason my wife and I have been giving serious thought to moving to TN near the Smokies. With the equity we have in our home now, we could buy a really nice property for a very cheap price.

07/13/2007 11:43 amI’ve actually had discussions with my current employer to remain employed and simply work remotely. You’re right though, there are many possibilities.
Now this post has me searching through the real estate listings in Tennessee again! Now I am looking more in the Memphis area though, as opposed to the area near Knoxville. I’ll probably waste far too much time looking at properties online now.

07/13/2007 11:46 amYeah actually a co-worker of mine on the old team I was on moved to Tuscon, AZ and works remotely full-time. No salary cut. He’s living like a king…imagine a DC/northern VA salary living in Tuscon!

07/13/2007 12:03 pmExactly! When we went to TN and looked at properties we had found, some of them were just far too remote and we were concerned how our kids would adjust to the schools and not having friends nearby.
But depending on the area, you can really make out well if you can keep a job from a higher cost area. I’ve tried to convince my wife that Costa Rica would be a nice location but she isn’t buying that yet.

07/14/2007 1:19 amI just sold my town home in Owings Mills (MD) for $340,000 and let me tell you it was not much compared to that listing. Granted I sold about a year ago but still, mine was only 5 years old. The listing mentioned it was completely remodeled…wondering if something was wrong…I mean you don’t see a listing like that in Sterling for 365K.
